I've been doing some research on it, and I've found some pretty good projects out there, although I'm afraid none of them will fit the time and space restraint I have. Still, they're worth mentioning. The best one I could find is Mintyboost by the famous Ladyada. It lives up to all the expectations, but I can't go for it because I simply dont have enough time to go hunting for or making the inductor. Plus, its a new ipod so I'd rather have a more stabilised voltage.
Yet Another speed bump I was hoping to avoid. Apple has become quite serious about its proprietary chargers, so it seems that the ipod communicates with the charger to make sure its the right one. I knew apple was too cheap to put a usb chip in its charger, so I did some digging and turns out I was right: All you need is a couple of pull-ups on the data line. It still means that I'll have to go resistor shopping god knows where.
So finally I bit the bullet and decided to design it myself. Its gonna mean a couple of all-nighters, but I guess sleep is not an option due to all the construction work going on in the roof. I just hope I don't piss my room-mate off from the smell of alcohol, ferric chloride and flux.
Updates on the design (if I manage to come up with one good enough) to follow.
Over and Out.
